Triple X Road Grant Application and Implementation

Oklahoma County, Oklahoma

Triple X Road is a thoroughfare system in Oklahoma County. The North Canadian River runs parallel to the road at multiple points.

Prior to 2007 the river in the vicinity was relatively stable. During the 2015 flooding event, it became clear the river would eventually take a portion of Triple X Road. The road was deemed unsafe for travel and closed in 2015. The continued closure of Triple X Road is more than an inconvenience; it affects travel times for all motorists, including emergency services.

In addition to road closures, the erosion of the North Canadian River has destroyed residential properties and prime farmland. In 2013, at least two structures fell into the river. In 2015, one family lost 100 acres of farmland when the river rerouted itself onto their land, cutting a new channel about 50 yards north of the old river bed.

The proposed mitigation plan includes channel restoration and bank stabilization to alleviate and mitigate flooding damage to Triple X Road. Meshek’s planning and grant administration team managed the HMGP grant application, which was approved by FEMA in early 2019.

Roadway projects like this one have not typically been funded through HMGP in the past. Triple X Road is the first project of this type to be approved in Oklahoma, thanks in part to the diligent analysis and creative problem-solving of our planning and grant administration team.
